THE PROJECT / AN ARTIST WITHOUT A FIXED IMAGE
Linda Perry has lived several public lives: unmistakable frontwoman, Grammy-nominated songwriter, producer, collaborator, mother and iconoclast. Don Hardy’s documentary moves past the mythology to meet the person still negotiating what remains, what changes and what must be released.
The title sequence needed to hold all of those identities without reducing Perry to a familiar greatest-hits portrait.
The film contains decades of public imagery, private history and creative reinvention. A conventional chronological montage would explain the biography while missing the emotional friction at its center.
Photographs, newsprint, handwritten marks and shifting scale form a tactile moving collage. Images appear as evidence under active examination, allowing different versions of Perry to occupy the same frame.
The sequence establishes memory as layered and unfinished before the documentary begins. It supported a feature that made its world premiere in Tribeca’s 2024 Spotlight+ program.
THE LANGUAGE / MEMORY AS MATERIAL
The design does not decorate the archive. It stages the act of looking back—selecting, tearing, enlarging and reconsidering the images that build a public life.
DESIGN PRINCIPLE
Let every image feel discovered rather than displayed. The sequence should carry the instability, courage and authorship of a life still being rewritten.
